OUR MISSION / PHILOSOPHY

Cemetery.rest is a digital memorial space dedicated to perpetual remembrance.

Through cross-platform visualization, physical archival, and community stewardship, we're building a memorial garden for those touched by the digital age.

Your memorial is data. The visualization is art. We separate the two intentionally. Think of what we do as landscaping for your grave.

Your inscription exists permanently in our database. How it appears across platforms evolves with technology - but the core record persists.

We aim to preserve these digital memorials with physical backups on technology built to last for millinia. We will store the data in a safe environment and we do regular physical backups of our system for preservation. Our mission pushes us to research and nurture this technology for the betterment of our garden.

Privacy by design. No tracking, no profiles, no surveillance. Just memory, honored.

HOW IT WORKS

Claim Your Plot - Support the archive by donating and receiving a memorial database entry with your inscription.

Receive Your Edit Key - A unique key (e.g., "bat482#skull91") allows future modifications. Guard it carefully.

Visit Your Memorial - Access across platforms: VRChat world, web interface, future platforms.

Perpetual Care - Regular database backups. Quarterly physical archival to M-Disc media.

THE GROUNDSKEEPERS

The Groundskeeper is a role assigned to those responsible for daily operations, content moderation, artistic direction, and community stewardship.

This role may pass between individuals as the cemetery evolves - ensuring the continuing care for the memorials.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What am I actually buying?
-You are donating to ensure the continued operation of our memorial database. As a thank you we will automatically add your entry suggestion to our "cemetery." This entry is designed to be a permanent memorial with your inscription with complimentary visualization across platforms.

Do I own the plot?
-No. You've reserved a space in our database to memorialize...whatever you want. Your space is reserved unless you violate cemtery guidelines, however. The cemetery retains all ownership.

What if I lose my edit key?
-We cannot recover it. We don't store edit keys (privacy by design). Edit keys are encrypted. Guard it carefully. Plots are meant to become "locked" when the holder can no longer able to edit it. It's part of the artistic vision of cemetery.rest.

Can my plot be removed?
-Yes, if content violates community standards (harassment, doxxing, illegal content). No refunds.

What if I want it removed?
-We cannot prove you are the original owner without the edit key. Apologies.

What happens if a platform shuts down?
-Your database entry persists. We'll maintain visualization on available platforms. The data outlasts any single platform.

Is this really perpetual?
-Best-effort. We commit to physical archival, database backups, and long-term maintenance. No service can guarantee eternity, but we're built for it.

Can I put real names on tombstones?
-Only if you're authorized by the estate. That means yes you can put your name. Don't doxx family members. Respect privacy. See our Rules & Regulations for details.

What about a celebrity?
-Due to the turbulent nature of popular culture, This will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Can I buy a plot and put my pet's name?
-We encourage it! We're mainly worried about respecting the privacy of the living and the next-of-kin for humans.

Can I buy a plot and put something that isn't really related to... well anything here?
-Just try to be respectful of neighboring plots. Your plot may not be shown on some platforms at the groundskeeper's discresssion.

Can I represent my avatar from [game] somehow?
-Right now we have no automatic infrastructure for such a thing. This could be under a custom tombstone or crypt request. Reach out!

Financial Support - Voluntary contributions help fund infrastructure, archival, and platform development. Not tax-deductible. No rewards program.

Art Donations - Artists may contribute tombstone designs, environmental assets, or lettering systems. Anonymous by design. No guaranteed implementation. Please reach out to contribute!

Memorial Services - Commission custom work (stonecutting, crypt design) from the Groundskeeper. Paid professional services. See Services page.
